The annual event at Roland Garros, one of tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments, will now possibly be the tennis season’s final major of the year. It is set to begin just six days after the end of the US Open, which typically is the last Grand Slam to be played each year. This news also makes it extremely likely that the other European clay court events, which are typically used as warm-up tournaments for the French Open, will not be played at all in 2020. These include the combined tournaments in Madrid and Rome, as well as others such as the ATP events in Barcelona and Monte Carlo, and the WTA tournament in Stuttgart.

At last year’s French Open, Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the fourth round. On the women’s side, Maria Sakkari fell in the second round and Valentini Grammatikopoulou lost in the third round of qualifying.

It should be noted that this decision made by the French Tennis Federation is being seen as one that is extremely controversial, as tennis’ governing bodies (as well as the players) were not informed or warned until the announcement was made. As a result, the French Tennis Federation is being severely criticized for making such a bold decision without consulting with anyone else beforehand.
