This year’s Greek third tier consisted of eight groups with 12-14 teams in each group. The group winners gained automatic promotion to next year’s Football League, while the eight runner-ups will compete in a playoff for the remaining four promotion spots to the 2019/20 Football League.
After the restructuring of Greece’s domestic leagues, the Football League will be the new third division as of the 2019/20 season while the Super League 2 will be the second division and the the Super League will remain the top flight. During this transition to the new structure, some teams will be negatively impacted for their efforts in the 2018/19 season, including the 12 clubs that will gain promotion from this year’s Gamma Ethniki.
Although these 12 teams will gain ‘promotion’ to the Football League, they will compete once again in the Greek third division as opposed to the second division. Thus, they will need to re-gain promotion from next year’s Football League to compete in the Greek second tier, the Super League 2.
The eight Gamma Ethniki group winners that will compete in next season’s Football League include: Kavala, Veria, Kronos Argyradon, Olympiacos Volou, Ierapetra, Ialysos, Egaleo, and Aspropyrgos.
The eight group runner-ups that will compete in the promotion playoffs for four spots in next year’s Football League include: Nestos Chrysoupolis, P.O Triglias, Thesprotos, Niki Volou, Ionikos, Diagoras Rodou, Aiolikos, and Kalamata
Thirty nine teams were relegated from this year’s Gamma Ethniki with notable names including Proodeftiki, Anagennisi Karditsas, and Panegialios.
