As a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, which has halted nearly all footballing competitions in Europe with the exception of Belarusian tournaments, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has decided to permanently end the 2019/2020 Gamma Ethniki - the fourth division under the Super League, Super League 2 and Football League - and regional leagues. The future of the Super League 2 and Football League is still very much up in the air.

Super League participants, however, will resume training on Tuesday with the championship due to resume in June.

These following teams have been declared champions of the eight Gamma Ethniki groups:

Panserraikos (Group 1)

Almopos Aridea (Group 2)

Pierikos (Group 3)

AEP Kozani (Group 4)

Kallithea (Group 5)

Rodos FC (Group 6)

Asteras Vlachioti (Group 7)

Episkopi (Group 8)

Originally, the EPO wanted a playoff system to decide which four teams earned promotion to the Football League, but this has now effectively been deemed impossible. As a result, the eight champions of the Gamma Ethniki groups are now demanding that the Super League 2 and the Football League are merged together, a strategy which would allow all clubs to be promoted:

“We, the eight teams declared champions after the decision made by the EPO, express our satisfaction for the fair outcome of our matches. In order for this decision of the EPO to have continuity and consistency, we want the leagues to be reconstructed, with the Football League and the Super League 2 to be merged together to create the Second Division.”

In the event that the Super League 2 and Football League are not merged, however, playoff games would somehow need to take place in order for four teams to earn promotion to the latter competition. A video conference will be held in the coming days to decide the future of the second and third tiers of Greek football.

The matter of relegation from the Gamma Ethniki is also yet to be decided.
