Giannakis signs with… Zenith!

There were rumblings about big announcement involving Greek basketball legend Panagiotis Giannakis, and the end result wasn’t what basketball fans expected.

Greek basketball icon Panagiotis Giannakis has found a team but it’s not a club that plays on the court. In fact, it’s not a club at all.

In an ad campaign that went viral overnight on Friday, Giannakis revealed he had signed on to be a spokesperson for the Thessaloniki-based energy company Zenith.

Previously known as AERIO Thessaloniki, the company rebranded to Zenith in 2017 and has emerged as Greece’s top provider of integrated energy offering natural gas and electricity.

It’s perhaps not the announcement that was expected as some basketball insiders hinted that Giannakis, who left his post as Aris head coach in 2018, could be making a return to the coaching scene.

While it appears Giannakis won’t be seen on the touchline for any Greek side any time soon, the 61-year-old will become the face of Zenith in its marketing campaigns going forward.

 In the new TV spot that aired, Giannakis was portrayed as the company’s new signing, similar to how a basketball team would announce a new signing. “I like to win. So, I chose a team that inspires my confidence. A leading team, with history and hundreds of friends across all of Greece. Zenith!” Giannakis says in the ad.
