Gkountoura defeated Venezuela’s Jornellys Velasquez 15-12 in the first round, and then edged Italy’s Martina Criscio 15-14, to book her spot in the round of 16. There, she destroyed France’s Manon Brunet (2019 European Championships silver medalist), 15-6. In the quarterfinals, she beat another Frenchwoman, Cecilia Berder (two-time World Championships medalist), 15-13.

The Greek came up short in the semifinals, falling 11-15 to top-seeded Sofia Velikaya of Russia. Ukraine’s Olha Karlan then defeated Velikaya to win gold. Romanian Bianca Pascu went away with a bronze medal, as did Gkountoura. Greece’s Despina Georgiadou also competed in the event, but fell in the opening round.
