Gorica the first team in Panionios’ path
Gorica defeated Sirak over the two legs in the Europa League first qualifying round and will face Panionios in the second qualifying round. The first leg is scheduled for next Thursday in Greece.
Gorica will be Panionios’ first opponents in Europa League qualifying. The Slovenian side defeated Sirak over the two legs (4-2 aggregate) in the first qualifying round and will face the Greek side in the second qualifying round. Gorica defeated Sirak in Armenia 0-2 in the first leg, however things were not so easy in Thursday's’ second leg back at home.
Although the Slovenian side scored early on to take the lead (3-0 on aggreagte), Sirak responded with two goals to take a 1-2 lead on the night (3-2 on aggregate). With Sirak only one goal away from knocking out Gorica, the pressure was on the hosts however the Slovenians held on and scrambled a draw with a stoppage time equalizer.
Panionios will host Gorica in the first leg this upcoming Thursday, July 13th, with kick-off set for 3:00 PM EST (10:00 pm local time). The second leg will take place one week later in Slovenia. Panionios, as the Superleague’s fifth placed team, will be the first Greek team to play in UEFA’s competitions for the 2017/18 season.
