After Vazaios’ historic gold in the men’s 200 m individual medley on Friday, the 25-year-old from Athens was not done just yet. He also went on to win gold in the men’s 200 m butterfly, setting a new national record with a time of 1:50.23 in the final. Silver went to Germany’s Ramon Klenz (1:51.51), and bronze to Great Britain’s James Guy (1:51.73). Vazaios had won silver in the men’s 200 m butterfly at the last edition of these Championships in 2017.

Vazaios also took home a bronze in the men’s 100 m individual medley, an event in which he had also won bronze in back in 2015. He set a new Greek national record time of 51.62 seconds in the final, just being gold medalist Kliment Kolesnikov of Russia (51.15), and silver medalist Sergey Fesikov, also of Russia (51.59). With Vazaios’ three medals in Glasgow, he has now become the first Greek swimmer to ever win three medals in the same year at the European Short Course Championships.

Anna Ntountounaki won bronze in the women’s 100 m butterfly, becoming the first Greek woman to ever win a medal at the European Short Course Championships. The 24-year-old from Chania on the island of Crete set a new national record in the final, clocking in at 56.44 seconds. Gold in that event went to Belarus’ Anastasiya Shkurdai (56.21), and silver to Italy’s Elena Di Liddo (56.37).

With two gold medals and two bronze medals, Greece finished eighth in the overall medal table. Winning four medals is a remarkable achievement for the Greek team, especially considering the fact that they only sent four swimmers to Glasgow.

Unlike Ntountounaki and Vazaios, Greece’s Apostolos Christou was unable to win a medal on Sunday. Christou finished eighth in the men’s 50 m backstroke, swimming the final in 23.51 seconds. He broke the national record in the semifinals with a time of 23.33 seconds. Despite not winning a medal, Christou had a very successful Championships, reaching the final of all three backstroke events (50 m, 100 m, and 200 m), and setting new national records in all three.
