It was a David and Goliath matchup, as the Greeks were expected to cruise to an easy victory over the South Koreans. Greece are one of the top teams in the world, and have finished third in the World Championships on two previous occasions (2005 and 2015), and also finished fourth at the most recent competition in 2017. On the other hand, South Korea are making their World Championships debut here, entirely due to the fact that they are hosting this year’s World Aquatics Championships.

The disparity between the two sides was evident from the get-go, as the Greeks found themselves ahead 7-0 after one period of play. Greece then led 14-0 after the second period, and 17-1 after the third period. In the end, Greece won 26-3 and now find themselves in first place in Group A.

Ioannis Fountoulis, Christodoulos Kolomvos, and Angelos Vlachopoulos led Greece, each scoring four goals. Konstantinos Genidounias and Alexandros Gounas were also key contributors for Greece, as they both scored three goals.

Greece will next play on Wednesday against Montenegro, who drew 10-10 with Serbia in their opening match. Greece will then close out group play on Friday against Serbia.
