Greece Finish 14th in UEFA’s Association Coefficient Rankings

Greece Finish 14th in UEFA’s Association Coefficient Rankings

With Olympiacos’ elimination in the UEFA Europe League, Greece lost their final representative in this year’s UEFA Competitions, meaning that Greece claimed 14th place in UEFA’s Association Coefficient Rankings for this season.

Greece officially finished 14th in this year’s UEFA Association Coefficient Rankings with 27.900 points after their final representative, Olympiacos, was knocked out of the Europa League. This means that for the 2018/2019 UEFA Season, Greece will have five representatives between the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

Next year’s Greek Superleague champion (2017-2018) will be granted a place in the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League 3rd qualifying round while the 2017-2018 Superleague runner up will begin in the 2018-2019 UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round.

The remaining three Greek teams will play in the UEFA Europa League. The 2017-2018 Greek Cup champion will begin in the 2018-2019 Europa League third qualifying round while both the 3rd and 4th placed teams from the Greek Superleague will be placed in the Europa League second qualifying round.

The 2018-2019 UEFA season will be the first season that UEFA implements their changes to the allocation of teams per country. The changes benefit the “stronger”, higher ranked nations while teams from lower ranked countries, such as Greece (14th), will have a much more difficult task to qualify for the group stages of both the Champions and Europa League.

As for next year, it will be a dogfight for 12th place between Greece, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland. Greece will begin in 14th place with 23.500 points while the Czech Republic (24.675) and Switzerland (23.700) begin with a small advantage in 12th and 13th place, respectively. Austria, however, will be in 15th place closely behind with 23.100 points.

With UEFA’s changes, next year Greece will look to secure at MINIMUM 15th place to assure 2 Champions League qualifying spots and 3 Europa League qualifying spots for the 2019/20 season. Twelfth place will result with the same breakdown however ONE of the three Europa League places (Greek Cup 2019 winner) will be granted an automatic spot in the group stages. If Greece were to climb up to 11th, where Netherlands will begin with 25.649 points, an automatic place in the Champions League group stages for the 2019 Superleague champion could be very likely.
