Last year, the UEFA Nations League entered the life of European football, and for many, the competition was a huge success. At first glance, the new competition was looked at as “glorified friendlies,” however, with a trophy (won by Portugal) and four tickets to UEFA Euro 2020 at stake, nations quickly understood its importance.

For the Greek national team, however, their first Nations League experience was one to forget. The Ethniki competed in Group 2 of League C along with Finland, Hungary, and Estonia, only to claim third place with nine points from six matches. Greece finished behind Finland and Hungary and ahead of minnows Estonia. Greece’s third-place finish in the group meant that the Ethniki secured their position in League C for the second edition of the competition, but threw out any hopes of earning a ticket to the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying playoffs.

Teams are placed in each league based on their final Nations League ranking from the 2018/19 edition (full ranking can be found here). Greece, who claimed 33rd place in the last Nations League, will compete in League C once again.

With League A and League B now containing 16 teams each (previously 12), Greece enter League C as the highest-ranked nation. On Friday, UEFA released the seedings for the upcoming UEFA Nations League draw which will take place on March 3rd in Amsterdam.

Greece were placed in Pot 1 along with Albania, Montenegro, and Georgia. Sixteen teams will participate in League C, and they will be separated into four groups (A-D) of four teams each.

Below are the League C seedings for the draw

Pot 1: Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Georgia

Pot 2: North Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus, Cyprus

Pot 3: Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Luxembourg

Pot 4: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova

Teams within the same pot cannot be drawn together. One team from each pot will be used to form each of the four groups in League C.

It has been rumored that the Nations League will play a small role in the European qualifiers for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, however, no details were released regarding this matter. All reports point that teams in League A will have a second-chance opportunity to qualify for the World Cup via the Nations League. However, Greece can use the 2020/21 Nations League as a great opportunity to gain promotion to League B and receive a better chance of qualifying for UEFA Euro 2024.

The top team from each group will gain promotion to League B while the last-placed nation in each group will be demoted to League D.
