The Ethniki Omada’s downfall continued on Friday as the FIFA rankings were released with Greece dropping nine places to 52nd for the month of June. Greece racked up just 1404 points. The Ethniki’s placement is the lowest since 2001 when Greece were ranked 57th in the world.

To put things into perspective, Greece sit behind teams suchs as Congo and just ahead of teams such as Montenegro, Jamaica, and Qatar.

Greece’s plunge in the rankings is a result of two successive defeats in Euro 2020 qualifying to Italy and Armenia. Italy moved up from 17th to 14th, while Armenia jumped nine places from 106th to 97th!

Finland, who sit second in Group J five points ahead of Greece and Bosnia, are now 56th from 60th while the struggling Bosnians dropped four places to 39th. Minnows Liechtenstein round up Group J sitting far back in 183rd.

Although there are six matches left in Euro 2020 qualifying, Greece’s chances of booking a ticket to the main event look bleak at the moment. If the Ethniki’s struggles continue and their place in the FIFA Rankings worsens or remains the same, it could have major repercussions for future tournaments, specifically the FIFA World Cup 2022.

The FIFA Rankings are typically used to seed teams for the draws in World Cup qualifying. With Greece continuing to fall in the rankings, Greece could very well be placed in pot four for the next World Cup qualifying draw. However, the second edition of the UEFA Nations League could be used to seed teams for the World Cup qualifying draw - this was the case for the Euro 2020 qualifying draw, where Greece were placed in pot four due to a third place finish in their respective League C group,

FIFA and UEFA will provide more insight on how seedings will be determined for the FIFA World Cup qualifying draw. Looking ahead, if Greece continue their poor performances and displays, the FIFA Rankings will be the least of the team’s worries.
