The Greeks went up 4-1 after the first period of play, and would later extend this lead to 8-2 by halftime. In the third period, Kazakhstan reduced Greece’s lead to just 9-5. However, a strong finish from the Greeks saw them claim a 13-7 win in the end. This win clinched second place in Group C for Greece.

Eleni Xenaki led Greece with three goals. Alexandra Asimaki, Ioanna Chydirioti, Nikoleta Eleftheriadou, and 16-year-old Eirini Ninou each scored two goals as well.

Greece will now face China in the playoff round on Saturday, with the winner to advance to the quarterfinals to take on the United States. China finished third in Group D, behind Italy and Australia. Greece and China last played each other in the fifth place game at the 2015 World Championships, with China prevailing after penalties. Before that, they played each other twice in the 2012 FINA World League, each winning one game there. These two teams also met in the final of the 2011 World Championships in China, which Greece won 9-8.
