The Greek team found themselves ahead 5-1 after the first period of play, and later increased this lead to 11-2 by halftime. At this point the victory was already almost certain for Greece, but Georgia put up a better fight in the second half. The Georgians were able to reduce Greece’s lead to 13-6 by the end of the third period, and the final score was 17-10 in favor of the Greeks.

Ioannis Fountoulis was Greece’s top scorer today with four goals. Konstantinos Genidounias and Angelos Vlachopoulos each scored three goals as well.

Greece will now wrap up group play on Saturday against winless France. A win there would guarantee Greece’s place in the knockout phase, while a win along with a Georgian win over Italy by more than two but less than 10 goals would see Greece win the group and get a bye to the quarterfinals.

GROUP D STANDINGS:
