Greece’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament schedule released

Greece will tip-off in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament on June 23rd against hosts Canada.

On Wednesday, the Greeks were drawn into Group A of the Canadian qualification competition for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Host nation Canada (Pot 4) and China (Pot 5) are the remaining two nations in the group while Uruguay, Turkey, and the Czech Republic will compete against each other in Group B of the qualification tournament in Canada. All matches will take place in Victoria. 

After the draw concluded, the schedule for the tournament was released with Greece scheduled to play the hosts, Canada, in their Group A opener on June 23rd. Below is Greece’s full Group A schedule. 

23-Jun: Greece - Canada

25-June: China - Greece

Two teams from both of the two groups qualify for the semi-finals of the qualification tournament. The winner of the competition then qualifies for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. If Greece advance to the semi-finals, they will play on June 27th and if the Episimi Agapimeni are victorious, they will advance to the final one day later.

There are four separate qualification tournaments, with the winning team of each competition progressing to the Olympics. Japan, Nigeria, Argentina, America, Iran, France, Spain and Australia have already qualified for the Olympic Games. 

Famous American coach Rick Pitino, who is also the boss of Panathinaikos, will be at the helm of the Greek national team for the qualifying tournament. Greece were knocked out in the second group stage of the 2019 FIBA World Cup under the leadership of Thanasis Skourtopoulos.
