Greek League Cup expected to make a comeback in May

Greek League Cup expected to make a comeback in May

At a recent Super League board of directors conference, the intention to bring back the old Greek League Cup was announced. According to information emerging from the organisation, the tournament will take place in May following the completion of the 2017/2018 Super League.

Interestingly, only one Greek League Cup ever took place. In the 1989/1990 campaign, AEK became the first (and currently last) winners of the tournament, defeating Olympiacos 3:2 in the final at the OAKA in Athens. However, there seems to be a high possibility that the competition will make a return this year.

The Super League’s proposal is for all sixteen teams in Greece’s highest footballing tier to participate in the League Cup, with the tournament being held in a knockout format without group stages. It would begin in May, after the championship has come to an end. Fifteen matches are planned - eight in the Last 16, four in the quarter-finals, two in the semi-finals and the one single final. Unlike the Greek Cup, the winners will not be granted a European berth for the next season.

Although it isn’t yet official that the League Cup will return, all clubs warmly greeted the news and are expected to unanimously vote in favour of the tournament coming back when the formal proposal is confirmed next month.
