Greek women finish sixth, Men’s team claim seventh spot

Play concluded at the 2020 European Water Polo Championships in Budapest, with Greece’s women finishing in sixth place, while the Greek men came in seventh place overall.

After losing 12-9 in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Spain, Greece’s women’s national water polo team beat France 13-3 in the 5th-8th place semifinals. Then, they lost to Italy in the fifth-place game by a score of 7-5. This was the 11th consecutive top-six finish at the European Championships for the Greek women.

Eleni Xenaki was Greece’s top scorer of the tournament, with 18 goals. Eleftheria Plevritou was Greece’s second-highest scorer with 17 goals. Her older sister, Margarita Plevritou, scored 14 goals throughout the tournament. Also having a good tournament was 19-year-old Maria Myriokefalitaki, who scored 11 goals in her national team debut. Lastly, veteran Christina Tsoukala had nine goals in Budapest.

Greece’s men’s national water polo team fell 14-11 to Croatia in the quarterfinals and then lost 12-9 to four-time defending champion Serbia in the 5th-8th place semifinals. Greece then beat Russia 11-9 in the seventh-place game. This is the fifth consecutive time that the Greek men finished in the top eight at the European Championships.

Greece’s top scorer of the tournament was Konstantinos Genidounias was 17 goals. Following him were Angelos Vlachopoulos (15 goals), Ioannis Fountoulis (10 goals), Alexandros Gounas (eight goals), and Stylianos Argyropoulos (six goals).
