Greeks Abroad Review: Bakasetas, Siopis participate in Alanyaspor victory

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

At the moment, the vast majority of European leagues are currently in the middle of their Christmas break, but a handful of championships are still running. In England, Sokratis Papastathopoulos participated in a draw at Bournemouth with struggling Arsenal, while Tasos Bakasetas, Manolis Siopis and Georgios Tzavellas all tasted victory with Alanyaspor in Turkey.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Started the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth, later being substituted in the 77th minute. Missed the 2-1 home loss to Chelsea.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Did not play any part in the 1-1 draw at Sheffield United and the emphatic 3-0 home victory against Aston Villa.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The injured forward is out with a long-term knee injury. This week, Brentford earned a 3-1 win against Swansea City, before losing 1-0 to Millwall on the road.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Played the entirety of a 1-0 away defeat to Cosenza and stayed on the bench in a 1-1 home draw with Livorno.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Started the dramatic 2-1 home victory against Konyaspor, eventually being replaced in the 69th minute.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Used as a substitute in the triumph over Konyaspor in the 55th minute of proceedings.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Sat on the bench in the same game.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Did not play in a 3-1 defeat against Wellington Phoenix at home.

ENGLAND

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Sat on the bench during the games with Bournemouth (1-1) and Chelsea (1-2).

BELGIUM

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Remained an unused substitute in a comfortable 5-0 triumph over Oostende.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Missed a 4-0 defeat to Club Brugge on the road.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Did not participate in a 1-0 home loss to St. Johnstone, but he was used as a substitute in stoppage time of a 2-1 away victory against Motherwell.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played the full 90 minutes of a 2-2 home draw with Denizlispor.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Rizespor/Turkish Super Lig): Watched his team lose 2-1 to Fenerbahce from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish First League): Didn’t participate in a 0-0 draw against Giresunspor at home.
