Greeks Abroad Review: Five goals scored across the leagues

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

The headline news came from Turkey, where international striker Konstantinos Mitroglou struck his maiden goal for Galatasaray in a dramatic 1:0 victory against Akhisarspor at home. In Holland, Marios Vrousai continued his excellent form for Willem II with his third marker in the Eredivisie, while Fortuna Sittard’s Lazaros Lamprou also scored. Taxiarchis Fountas (St. Polten) and Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda) hit the jackpot for their clubs in Austria and Hungary respectively.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes in the centre of defence as Arsenal defeated Southampton 2:0.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Not included in the squad for the win against Southampton at home.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Didn’t participate in the large 5:1 victory over Cardiff City in Wales.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Missed the 2:3 defeat at Borussia Dortmund through injury.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Played the full 90 minutes in a heavy 1:5 setback at Freiburg.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Sat on the bench with Werder drawing 1:1 at home to VfB Stuttgart.

Anastasios Donis (VfB Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Emerged from a bench as a substitute in the 1:1 draw against Werder Bremen after 58 minutes and took a yellow card.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): Didn’t participate in the 1:2 away loss to Regensburg as a result still being injured.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Started the dramatic 3:2 victory against Frosinone and was later replaced after 77 minutes.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Kept the bench warm with Cagliari conceding a 0:1 defeat to Sampdoria.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Stayed on the substitutes’ bench with Napoli thrashing Parma 4:0 on the road.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie A): Remained an unused substitute as Empoli lost 0:3 to AC Milan at the San Siro.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie B): Played the entire 90 minutes with Lecce losing 1:4 to Cittadella on the road.

Apostolos Vellios (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Missed the 2:6 home defeat to Kortrijk.

Odysseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Registered a clean sheet in a confident 4:0 victory against Chaves in Lisbon.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Played 90 minutes in the 4:0 home triumph over Chaves.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Was given 90 minutes on the pitch in a 1:1 draw with Valencia.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (Galatasaray/Turkish Super Lig): Scored a last-gasp winning goal to fire Galatasaray to a 1:0 victory against Akhisarspor at home. Played 90 minutes.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played the entirety of a 3:0 victory against Kasimpasa.

Carlos Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): The Copenhagen captain was booked by the referee while playing 90 minutes of the 1:1 home draw against Vendsyssel.

ENGLAND

Dimitris Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Sat on the bench with his team beating Queens Park Rangers 3:0.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Didn’t compete in the 1:0 home victory against Ingolstadt.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga 2): Contributed with an assist for Paderborn’s goal in the 1:1 draw with Magdeburg. Started the game and was substituted on 77 minutes.

FRANCE

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 1): Did not play any part in the 0:3 loss to Paris Saint Germain on the road.

HOLLAND

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Sat on the bench as AZ lost 1:2 to Willem II.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored the first goal in the 2:1 victory against AZ Alkmaar and played the full 90 minutes.

Evangelos Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Used as a substitute in stoppage time of the win over AZ at home.

Lazaros Lamprou (Fortuna Sittard/Eredivisie): Netted the opening goal in a 2:4 home loss to Heerenveen. Booked by the referee and played the entire game.

Konstantinos Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): The back-up goalkeeper watched Ajax defeat Den Haag 5:1 from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Kaloudis Lemonis (Telstar/Eerste Divisie): Missed the 0:2 home setback to Jong Ajax.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Emerged from the bench as a substitute after 59 minutes of the 1:0 victory against Lokeren.

Charis Charisis (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Used as a substitute after 75 minutes of play as Kortrijk eased past Waasland-Beveren 6:2.

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Stayed on the bench in a 1:3 away defeat to St. Truiden.

PORTUGAL

Nikolaos Ioannidis (Maritimo/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Didn’t play in a 0:0 home draw against Sporting Lisbon.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Giorgos Katidis (Pribram/Czech First League): Missed the 0:2 defeat to Sigma Olomouc.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played the entire game against Erzurum and received a yellow card. Ankaragucu won 2:1.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/First League): Started the 2:1 win over Giresunspor and was eventually replaced after 65 minutes.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): Began the 1:2 loss to Genclerbirligi and was replaced after 58 minutes of the match.

Giorgos Georgiadis (Elazigspor/First League): Did not play in the 3:1 victory against Karabukspor.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Not involved in a 2:0 away win against Xamax.

SWEDEN

Giannis Anestis (IFK Goteborg/Allsvenskan): Started the Swedish Cup match against GAIS, but the game was abandoned with the score at 0:0 after crowd trouble.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogkmpoe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Didn’t play in a 0:5 home defeat to Glasgow Rangers.

SERBIA

Nemanja Milojevic (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Emerged as a substitute after 63 minutes of the 0:1 home loss to Radnicki Nis.

Diamantis Chouchoumis (Vojvodina/Super Liga): Did not participate in the same match against Radnicki Nis at home.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Conceded one goal and took a yellow card in the 3:1 away triumph over Botev Vratsa.

Theofilos Kouroupis (FC Vereya/Parva Liga): Missed the 0:4 home defeat to Botev Plovdiv.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (MFK Zemplín Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Took a yellow card for his troubles while playing 90 minutes in a 0:0 draw with Nitra.

Christos Kountouriotis (MFK Zemplin Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Used as a substitute after 84 minutes of the 0:0 tie against Nitra at home.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FC Botosani/Romanian Liga 1): Played the full 90 minutes in a 1:1 draw against Gaz Metan and earned a yellow card.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Dinamo Bucharesti/Romanian Liga 1): Included in the starting line-up to play Calarasi and was replaced after 63 minutes. The match ended all square at 0:0.

Giorgos Koutroubis (Concordia/Romanian Liga 1): Competed for the entire 90 minutes in a 1:3 home defeat to Voluntari.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Played 90 minutes of the 1:1 draw against Mattersburg on the road.

Taxiarchis Fountas (St. Polten/Austrian Bundesliga): Scored a penalty in a 1:1 tie with Hartberg. Played the full game.

POLAND

Giannis Mystakidis (Górnik Zabrze/Ekstraklasa): Given a place in the starting line-up for the match Zaglebie and took a yellow card. Substituted at half-time as his club won 2:1.

Giorgos Mygas (Zagłębie/Ekstraklasa): Started the 1:2 defeat to Górnik Zabrze and was taken off after 86 minutes of action.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Emerged as a substitute in stoppage time of the 2:2 away draw at Mezokovesd-Zsory.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Scored his team’s first goal in the 2:2 tie with Mezokovesd-Zsory, but later in the same game, he also inadvertently netted an own-goal for the opponents. Played 90 minutes.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Played 90 minutes of a 1:2 home defeat to Sabail.

INDIA

Panagiotis Triadis (North East United/Indian Super League): Started the 1:1 home draw against Pune City and was substituted after 69 minutes.
