Greeks Abroad Review: Kone scores in Australia

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

Veteran midfielder Panagiotis Kone hit the target for Western United in the A-League, helping his team earn a 3-1 victory against Melbourne Victory. Elsewhere, Vangelis Pavlidis made an assist in Willem II’s eye-catching 2-0 triumph at Ajax, while Panagiotis Vlachodimos once again hit the jackpot in the third tier of German football.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Played 90 minutes as Arsenal defeated West Ham United 3-1.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the game against West Ham.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Did not participate in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The Greek forward is out with a long-term injury. This weekend, Brentford conceded a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on the road.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Stayed on the bench during a 2-1 home triumph over Schalke 04.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Remained an unused substitute as Hoffenheim came up short 3-1 at RB Leipzig.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): The back-up goalkeeper kept the other substitutes’ company as Werder lost 1-0 at home against Paderborn.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): Played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 victory against Werder Bremen and received a yellow card for his troubles.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): The ostracized defender did not participate in a 1-0 defeat against Heidenheim.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Played the entirety of a battling 1-1 draw at Udinese.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Kept on the bench while Napoli could only tally a 1-1 tie against Udinese on the road.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Booked by the referee while playing the full match against Genoa at home. The game ended level at 2-2.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Emerged as a substitute for the second half of the 2-2 draw at Sassuolo.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Helped Empoli defeat Ascoli 2-1 at home by playing the entire 90 minutes.

Odisseas Vlahcodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Conceded the one goal as Benfica secured a 4-1 triumph at Boavista.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Used as a substitute for the concluding two minutes of the same game.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The injured centre-back missed Leganes’ 3-2 win against Celta Vigo at home.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Played the entire 90 minutes in defence as rock-bottom Deportivo slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Zaragoza.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Included in the starting line-up to play Strasbourg and was later substituted in the 74th minute. Toulouse were beaten 4-2.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Stayed on the bench during a 3-1 home victory against St. Etienne.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Remained an unused substitute in a 5-0 thrashing of Fortuna Sittard.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): The young centre-back is out with a serious knee injury. AZ defeated Zwolle 3-0 this week.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Emerged as a substitute in the 87th minute of a shock 2-0 triumph at reigning champions Ajax.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Popped up with an assist for the second goal against Ajax in Amsterdam. Substituted in stoppage time.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played the entire 90 minutes of a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Galatasaray.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Received a yellow card against Galatasaray on the road and was substituted in the 88th minute.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Kept on the bench in the same match.

Carlos Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Played the entirety of a 1-0 away win at Nordsjaelland. 

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Scored the second goal of a 3-1 victory against Melbourne Victory at home. Played 90 minutes.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St. Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Did not participate in a 1-0 defeat to Regensburg.

Ioannis Gelios (Holstein/German Bundesliga 2): Conceded four goals in a 4-2 loss against Osnabruck.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Grossaspach/Liga 3): Scored his team’s goal in a 1-1 draw against Munich 1860. Substituted in the 89th minute of proceedings.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Kept on the bench during a 0-0 home draw with Feyenoord.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): Remain an unused substitute in the impressive 2-0 victory at Ajax.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Played the entire 90 minutes of the large 3-0 home win against Oss.

BELGIUM

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Kept on the bench in a 0-0 draw with Anderlecht in Brussels.

Fjorin Durmishaj (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Started the match against Antwerp and was substituted after the first half. His club contrived to concede an emphatic 4-0 defeat.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Missed the 2-0 defeat to Gent.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Jupiler League): Played the entire 90 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Cagliari at home.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Not a member of the matchday squad as Basel earned a comfortable 4-0 victory against Sion.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Midweek, he scored in the 2-1 loss against Celtic in Glasgow after appearing as a substitute in the 77th minute, before he played 55 minutes of the 1-0 home defeat to St. Mirren.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes of a 3-1 home defeat against Goztepe.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Rizespor/Turkish Super Lig): Sat on the bench as Rizespor lost 1-0 to Kayserispor.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish Super Lig): Started the game against Osmanlispor and was substituted in the penultimate minute. The match ended level at 0-0.

POLAND

Michalis Manias (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Used as a substitute in the 90th minute of a 1-0 home win against Plast Gliwicki.

Konstantinos Triantafyllopoulos (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Played the entirety of the victory over Plast Gliwicki, receiving a yellow card along the way.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Watched Slavia Sofia defeat Botev Vratsa from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Theofilos Kouroupis (Vitosha Bistritsa/Parva Liga): Missed a 2-0 away loss at the hands of Levski Sofia.

Dimitris Chantakias (Cherno More/Parva Liga): Received a yellow card while playing the full game against Ludogorets on the road. The match ended level at 1-1.

Giannis Kargas (Levski Sofia/Parva Liga): Played the full 90 minutes against Vitosha Bistritsa in defence.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Did not play any part in the 2-0 victory against Spartak Trnava at home.

Kyriakos Savvidis (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Played the entire 90 minutes of the triumph over Spartak Trnava.

Dimitris Popovits (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Used as a substitute against Spartak Trnava with 88 minutes on the clock.

Christos Kountouriotis (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Remained on the bench during the same match.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FCSB/Liga 1): Played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 home win against Gaz Metan in Bucharest.

Athanasios Papazoglou (FC Voluntari/Liga 1): Used as a substitute in the 75th minute of a 2–1 defeat to Viitorul.

Okan Chatziterzoglou (Academica Clinceni/Liga 1): Academica Clinceni will next play on Tuesday.

Minas Chalkiadakis (FC Botosani/Liga 1): Missed the unexpected 2-1 home triumph over current champions CFR Cluj.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Kept on the bench during a 1-0 away defeat against Ujpest.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played 90 minutes of the loss to Ujpest on the road.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Competed against Altach for the entire 90 minutes. Sturm lost 2-1 at home.

Taxiarchis Fountas (Rapid Vienna/Austrian Bundesliga): Did not play any part in a 2-2 draw with Austria Vienna.

Kosmas Gezos (Austria Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): The next match will take place in 2020.

Polydoros Gezos (Austria Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga): The next match will take place in 2020.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Included in the starting line-up to play against Sabah Baku, receiving a yellow card before being replaced in the 57th minute. Neftchi won 2-0.

Anastasios Papazoglou (Zira/Premier League): Kept on the bench during a 4-1 home win against Sabail.
