Greeks Abroad Review: Lack of goals across Europe
 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

This week, only one goal was scored, as Kosmas Gezos struck gold for Austria Klagenfurt in the second tier of Austrian football. Elsewhere, Vangelis Pavlidis helped Willem II defeat PSV Eindhoven, Sokratis Papastathopoulos was left on the bench for Arsenal and Odisseas Vlachodimos tallied another win with Benfica.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Remained on the bench as Arsenal lost 2-0 to Leicester City.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Not included in the team to play against Leicester on the road.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Started the 2-0 victory against Norwich City away from home and was substituted in the 88th minute.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The Greek striker is out with a long-term injury. Brentford defeated Wigan this week.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Remained on the bench in a 2-0 away win at Wolfsburg.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Used as a substitute in the 74th minute of a 2-1 triumph at Cologne.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Kept on the bench during a 3-1 loss against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): The talented midfielder played 90 minutes against Augsburg at home. Paderborn lost 1-0.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): Ostracized from the first team, the centre-back didn’t play in a 1-1 away draw against Kiel.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Missing from the squad at the weekend. Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw by Genoa.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): The back-up goalkeeper watched the 0-0 tie against Genoa from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes of a 4-2 loss to Lazio in Rome.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Kept the bench warm as Cagliari defeated Fiorentina 5-2 at home.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Remained an unused substitute in a 2-1 home defeat against Pescara.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Conceded the one goal as Benfica defeated Santa Clara 2-1 on the road.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Did not participate in the 2-1 victory against Santa Clara.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Helped Leganes pick up a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad by playing the entire 90 minutes in defence.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Played the full 90 minutes against Elche as Deportivo conceded a 3-1 defeat at home.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Introduced as a half-time substitute. Toulouse ended up losing 3-0 against Montpellier on the road.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Started the 0-0 draw against Angers before being replaced at half time.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Used as a substitute in the 67th minute of a 2-1 defeat to Willem II.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Played 90 minutes against Emmen. AZ claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory as they continue to occupy second place.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Missed the 2-1 triumph over PSV at home through injury.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): The young striker was included in the starting line-up to play PSV and was substituted in the 80th minute.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes of a 1-0 away defeat to Trabzonspor.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Included in the starting line-up to play against Trabzonspor and was substituted with two minutes remaining.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played the entire 90 minutes of the 1-0 loss to Trabzonspor and received a yellow card for his troubles.

Carlos Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): The central midfielder played 90 minutes as reigning champions Copenhagen lost 4-1 to Midtjylland.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Substituted in the 22nd minute of a 2-1 home win against the Sydney Wanderers.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St. Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Started the 1-1 draw against Bochum and was substituted in the 73rd minute.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Grossaspach/Liga 3): Played 90 minutes of a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Mannheim at home.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Sat on the bench with Vitesse losing 2-1 against Groningen.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): Watched Willem II beat PSV 2-1 from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Started the 1-0 win against NAC Breda at home and was substituted in the 74th minute of play.

BELGIUM

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Did not compete against Eupen. Charleroi won 1-0 at home.

Fjorin Durmishaj (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Remained an unused substitute as Waasland-Beveren defeated Kortrijk 3-1 on the road.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Didn’t play any part in a 2-1 home loss to Anderlecht.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Played the entire 90 minutes against Bologna as Sassuolo emerged victorious 3-1.

BELARUS

Giorgos Katsikas (Dynamo Brest/Belarusian Premier League): Missed a 1-1 draw at Isloch.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Not included in the squad for an away match against Lugano. Basel won 3-0 with ease.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Didn’t participate in a 2-2 away draw against Kilmarnock.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Received a yellow card while playing the full 90 minutes of a 2-1 away loss to Basaksehir.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Rizespor/Turkish Super Lig): Kept on the bench with Rizespor defeating Antalyaspor 1-0.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish First League): Appeared as a substitute in the 63rd minute of a 1-0 home defeat against Karagumruk.

POLAND

Michalis Manias (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): An unused substitute in a 1-0 triumph at Lechia Gdansk.

Konstantinos Triantafyllopoulos (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Helped his team beat Lechia Gdansk by playing 90 minutes in defence.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Sat on the bench as Slavia lost 1-0 to CSKA in a Sofia derby.

Theofilos Kouroupis (Vitosha Bistritsa/Parva Liga): Remained an unused substitute in a 1-0 home defeat against Ludogorets.

Dimitris Chantakias (Cherno More/Parva Liga): Played 90 minutes of 1-0 defeat against FC Etar.

Giannis Kargas (Levski Sofia/Parva Liga): Stayed on the bench against Botev Plovdiv on the road. Levski Sofia lost 1-0.

SLOVAKIA

Lazaros Rota (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Played 90 minutes of a heavy 4-0 defeat against Senica.

Kyriakos Savvidis (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Also stayed on the pitch for the entirety of the loss to Senica on the road.

Dimitris Popovits (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Didn’t play against Senica.

Christos Kountouriotis (Michalovce/Fortuna Liga): Also played 90 minutes of the 4-0 setback to Senica away from home.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FCSB/Liga 1): Used as a substitute in the 73rd minute of a 2-0 away win at FC Botosani. FCSB occupy fifth place of the standings.

Athanasios Papazoglou (FC Voluntari/Liga 1): Started a 1-0 loss to Astra and was later replaced in the 70th minute.

Okan Chatziterzoglou (Academica Clinceni/Liga 1): Played the entirety of a 1-0 win against Politechnica Iasi.

Minas Chalkiadakis (FC Botosani/Liga 1): Included in the starting line-up to play against FCSB and was replaced in the 58th minute.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Did not participate in a 1-1 draw against Paks.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played 90 minutes of the 1-1 tie with Paks on the road.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Played 90 minutes of a 3-1 home victory against Hartberg.

Taxiarchis Fountas (Rapid Vienna/Austrian Bundesliga): Didn’t play against Altach. Rapid claimed a confident 3-0 triumph on the road.

Kosmas Gezos (Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): Scored his team’s second goal in a 4-2 away victory at Wacker Innsbruck. Booked by the referee and played 90 minutes.

Polydoros Gezos (Klagenfurt/Austrian Bundesliga 2): Stayed on the bench during the same match.

AZERBAIJAN

Vangelis Platellas (Neftchi Baku/Premier League): Used as a substitute in the 70th minute of a 2-1 loss to Kesla.

Anastasios Papazoglou (Zira/Premier League): Emerged from the bench in the third minute of stoppage time of a 1-1 draw at Qarabag.
