Greeks Abroad Review: Plenty of goals across the continent

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

The goals were flowing around Europe this weekend, as Vangelis Pavlidis struck gold for Willem II, Rapid Vienna hitman Taxiarchis Fountas registered two goals, Stelios Kitsiou struck a dramatic equaliser for Ankaragucu at Galatasaray while Athanasios Papazoglou (Voluntari), Aris Soiledis (FCSB) and James Efmorfidis (Almere City) also hit the target.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players)

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Received a yellow card while playing 90 minutes of the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. Replaced after 69 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Standard Liege in the UEFA Europa League.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Given 90 minutes on the pitch against Standard Liege in Belgium. Not included in the squad to face Manchester City.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Did not play any part in a 2-0 loss to Liverpool.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The striker is out with a long-term injury. Brentford defeated Fulham 1-0 at home this week.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Used as a substitute in the 66th minute of a 2-0 setback against Cologne.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Kept on the bench during a 4-2 home loss to Augsburg.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): Remained an unused substitute as Werder were thrashed 6-1 by Bayern in Munich.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): Played the entire 90 minutes of a 1-1 home draw with Union Berlin.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga 2): The central defender, frozen out of the first team, missed a 1-1 draw at Sandhausen.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Played the entire games against Genk in the UEFA Champions League (4:0) and Parma in the domestic championship (1:2).

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Missed the match with Genk and was on the bench in the game against Parma.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Played 90 minutes of a disappointing 3-0 loss at Brescia.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Competed against Lazio for the entire 90 minutes. Cagliari suffered a 2-1 defeat at home.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Played the full 90 minutes as Empoli conceded a 2-0 loss to Entella on the road.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Tallied two clean sheets in wins against Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Champions League (3-0) and Famalicao in the Liga NOS (4-0).

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Used as a substitute for the concluding nine minutes against Zenit and sat on the bench in the 4-0 triumph over Famalicao.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Missed the 1-1 draw against Alaves through injury.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Substituted after 62 minutes of a 2-0 loss at Ponferradina.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Emerged as a substitute in the 66th minute of yet another defeat, this time by a scoreline of 1-0 at home against Reims.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Didn’t participate in the match against Toulouse on the road.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Sat on the bench during a comprehensive 3-1 loss to Feyenoord.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): The injured defender missed the 4-0 loss at Manchester United and the important 1-0 triumph over Ajax.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Used as a substitute with seven minutes remaining of a 2-1 victory at Heerenveen.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored his team’s first goal against Heerenveen. Played the full game.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Started the home match with Antalyaspor, later being substituted in the 58th minute of proceedings.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes against Antalyaspor and received a yellow card.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Also played the entirety of the same match.

Carlos Zeca (FC Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Missed the 1-0 loss to Malmo in the Europa League and played 90 minutes of a 2-1 win against Odense, receiving a booking in the process. Cypriot forward Pieros Sotiriou scored twice in that particular game.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Played 90 minutes of a 2-0 victory at Brisbane Roar.

GERMANY

Dimitris Diamantakos (St. Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Did not participate in a 3-1 victory against Wehen.

Ioannis Gelios (Holstein/German Bundesliga 2): Didn’t play in the 2-2 draw with Nuremberg on the road.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Grossaspach/Liga 3): Played the full 90 minutes of a 2-1 setback away to Carl Zeiss Jena.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Kept on the bench in a 3-0 victory at Twente.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): The back-up goalkeeper watched Willem II beat Heerenveen from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Hit the target in a 3-2 win Nijmegen and was later substituted in the 89th minute.

BELGIUM

Stergos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Sat on the bench while his club comfortably defeated Cercle Brugge 3-0.

Fjorin Durmishaj (Waasland-Beveren/Jupiler League): Did not play any part in a 4-1 defeat to Genk on the road.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Missed a 5-1 triumph over St. Truiden.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Helped Sassuolo tally a 0-0 tie at AC Milan by playing the entire 90 minutes.

SWITZERLAND

Konstantinos Dimitriou (FC Basel/Swiss Super League): Left out of the squad for a game against FC Luzern on the road as Basel lost 2-1. He also missed the 2-0 victory against Trabzonspor in the Europa League.

SCOTLAND

Marios Ogboe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Used as a substitute in the 81st minute of a 1-0 defeat at Aberdeen.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Scored a last-gasp equaliser at Galatasaray in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Played 90 minutes.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Rizespor/Turkish First League): Kept on the bench during a 3-0 home defeat to Kasimpasa, before he played the entire match against Samsunspor in the Turkish Cup on Tuesday (1-1).

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish First League): Remained an unused substitute in a 1-0 win against Adana.

POLAND

Michalis Manias (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Emerged as a substitute with 23 minutes remaining against Wisla Krakow. His club lost 1-0.

Konstantinos Triantafyllopoulos (Pogon Szczecin/Ekstraklasa): Missed the game with Wisla Krakow.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): Earned a chance between the sticks at the weekend, conceding the one goal in a 1-1 draw with Ludogorets.

Theofilos Kouroupis (Vitosha Bistritsa/Parva Liga): Did not compete in a 2-0 defeat to Botev Plovdiv.

Dimitris Chantakias (Cherno More/Parva Liga): Missed the 1-1 draw against Arda at home.

Giannis Kargas (Levski Sofia/Parva Liga): Stayed on the bench during a 0-0 tie at Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

ROMANIA

Aris Soiledis (FCSB/Liga 1): Scored the first goal in a 2-0 triumph at Viitorul Constanta. He dedicated his goal to his father, who subsequently passed away on Monday.

Athanasios Papazoglou (FC Voluntari/Liga 1): Struck his team’s only goal as FC Voluntari conceded a 2-1 loss to Universitatea Craiova on the road.

Okan Chatziterzoglou (Academica Clinceni/Liga 1): Did not play in the 1-1 draw with FC Botosani.

Minas Chalkiadakis (FC Botosani/Liga 1): Didn’t participate in the same game.

HUNGARY

Theodoros Berios (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Remained an unused substitute in a 2-0 home defeat against MOL Fehervar.

Stavros Tsoukalas (Kisvarda/OTP Bank Liga): Played 90 minutes of the loss to MOL Fehervar on Saturday.

AUSTRIA

Anastasios Avlonitis (Sturm Graz/Austrian Bundesliga): Provided an assist for the first goal of an exciting 3-3 draw at LASK Linz. Played 90 minutes.

Taxiarchis Fountas (Rapid Vienna/Austrian Bundesliga): Scored twice in a routine 3-0 win at Admira. Substituted in the 78th minute.
