Greeks Abroad Review: Stafylidis scores stunner 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

In the Bundesliga, Konstantinos Stafylidis got on the scoresheet with a stunning strike for Hoffenheim, registering his team’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. Elsewhere, Vangelis Pavlidis scored the winning marker for high-flying Willem II in the Eredivisie, while Georgios Tzavellas and Tasos Bakasetas both grabbed goals for Alanyaspor during an emphatic 5-1 beating of Kayserispor in Turkey.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Not included in the squad for the 1-1 draw against Sheffield United in London.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Kept on the bench during a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Remained an unused substitute as Bayer comfortably defeated Paderborn 4-1 on the road.

Sebastian Vasiliadis (Paderborn/German Bundesliga): Played 90 minutes of the heavy 4-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, receiving a yellow card in the process.

Konstantinos Stafylidis (Hoffenheim/German Bundesliga): Scored a wonderful goal while playing the entirety of a 2-1 home loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Stefanos Kapino (Werder Bremen/German Bundesliga): As usual, the back-up goalkeeper was kept on the bench. This week, Werder defeated Fortuna Dusseldorf 1-0 on the road.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Played 90 minutes of a 2-0 home defeat to Fiorentina.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Watched his team lose against Fiorentina from the comfort of the substitutes’ bench.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Remained on the bench as Lecce held Internazionale to a 1-1 draw at home.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Kept on the bench in a 2-2 tie with Brescia on the road.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Recorded an impressive clean sheet and took a yellow card in the 2-0 derby triumph over Sporting.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Didn’t move from the bench in the same match.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The injured defender missed the 3-0 home defeat to Getafe.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Kept on the bench in the 2-1 triumph over Racing and the 1-0 victory against Cadiz.

Efthymis Koulouris (Toulouse/Ligue 1): Toulouse did not play this week.

Anastasios Donis (Reims/Ligue 1): Remained on the bench during a 1-1 draw at Amiens.

Konstantinos Mitroglou (PSV Eindhoven/Eredivisie): Not included in the squad to play against VVV Venlo on the road. The match ended level at 1-1.

Marios Vrousai (Willem II/Eredivisie): Kept as an unused substitute as Willem II tallied an important 3-1 triumph at AZ Alkmaar.

Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored the winning goal against AZ Alkmaar while playing the full game.

Tasos Bakasetas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Netted the second goal for his team as Alanyaspor thrashed Kayserispor 5-1 at home. Was substituted in the 68th minute of play.

Manolis Siopis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Dished out an assist for the third Alanyaspor goal in the same match. Played 90 minutes.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Super Lig): Scored the first goal against Kayserispor and played the entire game.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Started the 3-0 win against the Central Coast Mariners, later being substituted in the 70th minute.

NETHERLANDS

Konstantinos Lamprou (Vitesse/Eredivisie): Watched Vitesse beat Fortuna Sittard 3-1 on the road from the substitutes’ bench.

Giorgos Strezos (Willem II/Eredivisie): The goalkeeper was an unused substitute as Willem II defeated AZ Alkmaar 3-1.

James Efmorfidis (Almere City/Eerste Divisie): Despite playing the entire 90 minutes, he couldn’t prevent his club from conceding a 2-0 loss to De Graafschap.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Marinos (Charleroi/Jupiler League): Remained an unused substitute in the 1-1 draw at Eupen.

Nikos Kenourgios (Zulte Waregem/Jupiler League): Didn’t participate in a 3-0 loss to Genk at home.

Dimitris Chatziisaias (Cercle Brugge/Jupiler League): The defender, on loan from Rizespor, played the entire match against Royal Antwerp, with his new team suffering a 2-1 defeat.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Played the full game against Torino, picking up a booking for his troubles. Sassuolo won 2-1.

Dimitris Nikolaou (Empoli/Serie B): Stayed on the bench with Empoli losing 1-0 at Juve Stabia.

TURKEY

Stelios Kitsiou (Ankaragucu/Turkish Super Lig): Played 90 minutes of the 1-0 loss to Konyaspor at home.

Andreas Tatos (Altay/Turkish Super Lig): Did not play any part in the 1-0 away defeat to Umraniyespor.
