Greeks Abroad Review: Tsimikas scores third league goal in Holland
 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in other leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

Willem II left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas was the only Greek to find the back of the net, scoring his third goal of the Eredivisie season in a 2:2 draw with Vitesse on Sunday. Thanos Petsos contributed with an assist in Austria, setting up the second marker for Rapid Vienna in a 2:0 victory against LASK Linz.

Elsewhere, Konstantinos Mavropanos put on another excellent showing with Arsenal in the Premier League, Andreas Samaris played a full match with Benfica and Panagiotis Vlachodimos helped Nimes earn promotion to Ligue 1. 

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players and/or Greeks playing in high profile leagues):

Kostas Mitroglou (Marseille/Ligue 1): Missed Marseille’s 2:1 victory against Nice because of injury.

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Premiera Liga): Competed against Sporting Lisbon for the entire 90 minutes. The game ended in a 0:0 draw.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund/German Bundesliga): Earned a yellow card while playing the entirety of the 1:2 home loss to Mainz.

Tasos Donis (Stuttgart/German Bundesliga): Made an appearance as a substitute after 61 minutes against Hoffenheim. Stuttgart won 2:0 at home.

Panagiotis Retsos (Bayer Leverkusen/German Bundesliga): Played the full 90 minutes in the 0:0 tie with Werder Bremen and took a yellow card for his troubles.

Kyriakos Papadopoulos (Hamburg/German Bundesliga): Stayed on the pitch for the whole game against Eintracht Frankfurt, but Hamburg dropped a painful 0:3 defeat on the road.

Jose Holebas (Watford/English Premier League): Booked by the referee and played 90 minutes in Watford’s tight 2:1 victory over Newcastle.

Orestis Karnezis (Watford/English Premier League): The Greek international conceded one goal in the same match against Newcastle at home.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Participated in his second senior Arsenal match, playing 90 minutes in the 5:0 win against Burnley and impressing with an assured performance.

Kostas Stafylidis (Stoke City/English Premier League): Still on the sidelines with a chest injury. Stoke lost 1:2 to Crystal Palace, in turn suffering relegation.

Stefanos Kapino (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Nottingham’s goalkeeper let in three goals in the dramatic 2:3 defeat against Bolton Wanderers.

Apostolos Vellios (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Came off the bench after 76 minutes in the loss to Bolton away from home.

Kostas Manolas (AS Roma/Serie A): Remained on the bench in Roma’s 1:0 away victory against Cagliari in the Italian top flight.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): The 24-year old took a yellow card and played 90 minutes in the 0:1 loss to Roma at home.

Vassilis Torosidis (Bologna/Serie A): Played the final 30 minutes as a substitute in Bologna’s 1:3 defeat against Juventus in Turin.

Georgios Tzavellas (Alanyaspor/Turkish Superlig): Gifted the entire match against Osmanlispor and registered a yellow card. The match finished in a 1:1 draw.

Giannis Maniatis (Alanyaspor/Turkish Superlig): The club’s fellow Greek also played 90 minutes in the same match and was cautioned by the referee.

Georgios Samaras (Samsunspor/First League): Not involved in Samsunspor’s thrilling 3:3 home tie against Umrainyespor.

Michalis Sifakis (Samsunspor/First League): The veteran goalkeeper didn’t participate in the same match with Umraniyespor at home.

Giannis Gianniotas (Valladolid/Segunda Division): Introduced into the action after 66 minutes of play against Numancia. His club earned a 1:0 victory.

Giannis Fetfatzidis (Al Ahli/Saudi Professional League): Wasn’t included in Al Ahli’s roster for the 1:2 loss against Al Sadd in the Asian Champions League.

Nikolaos Karelis (Genk/Jupiler League): Played the last eight minutes of Genk’s large 0:5 thrashing at the hands of Standard Liege.

Carlos Zeca (Copenhagen/Danish Superliga): Stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in the 1:1 draw with Brondby. Cypriot forward Pieros Sotiriou scored Copenhagen’s goal in the first half.

Sotiris Ninis (Maccabi Petah-Tikva/Israeli Premier League): As usual, the midfielder wasn’t present in his club’s squad. Maccabi Petah-Tikva beat Ashdod 2:1.

ENGLAND

Andreas Bouchalakis (Nottingham Forest/English Championship): Remained on the bench during Nottingham’s 2:3 setback to Bolton Wanderers.

Dimitrios Konstantopoulos (Middlesbrough/English Championship): Kept the other substitutes company in the 2:2 draw with Ipswich.

Ilias Chatzitheodoridis (Cheltenham/English League 2): Played 90 minutes against Crewe, however Cheltenham lost 1:2.

GERMANY

Giannis Gelios (Augsburg/German Bundesliga): Not present in the Augsburg roster for the match against Schalke 04. His club dropped a 1:2 home defeat.

Dimitris Diamantakos (St Pauli/German Bundesliga 2): Replaced in the final minute of St Pauli’s 1:0 triumph over Arminia Bielefeld in the German second division.

BELGIUM

Giorgos Koutroubis (Standard Liege/Jupiler League): Remained on the bench in Standard Liege’s convincing 5:0 win against Genk.

Stergos Marinos (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): Didn’t play any part in the club’s 1:3 defeat against Eupen on the road.

Stelios Kitsiou (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): He also wasn’t included in Sint Truiden’s squad on Saturday.

Charis Charisis (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): Appeared as a substitute after 59 minutes of play in the 1:3 loss to Eupen.

Dimitris Goutas (Sint Truiden/Jupiler League): Stayed on the pitch for Sint Truiden during the entire 90 minutes.

Athanasios Papazoglou (Kortrijk/Jupiler League): Thrown into the action on the 76th minute mark in the 1:2 defeat against Zulte Waregem.

Georgios Galitsios (Mouscron/Jupiler League): Played the entirety of Mouscron’s disappointing 2:3 setback to Waasland-Beveren away.

ITALY

Marinos Oikonomou (Bari/Serie B): Kept the bench warm in Bari’s 3:1 triumph over Perugia at home.

Michalis Iladis (Salernitana/Serie B): Couldn’t be found in the roster for Salernitana’s 1:0 win against Entella.

Dimitris Konstantinidis (Brescia/Serie B): Nowhere to be seen as Brescia drew 2:2 with Cittadella.

Dimitris Sounas (Monopoli/Serie C): Kept on the bench during Monopoli’s 4:1 home victory against Lecce in the third level of Italian football.

TURKEY

Andreas Tatos (Elazigspor/First League): Wasn’t in the Elazigspor squad for the 2:2 draw with Istanbulspor.

Andreas Vasilogiannis (Umraniyespor/First League): The Umraniyespor coaches decided to leave him out of the roster. The team drew 3:3 with Samsunspor.

PORTUGAL

Anastasios Karamanos (Feirense/Portuguese Premiera Liga): Came on for the last nine minutes of Feirense’s 1:2 defeat against newly crowned Portuguese champions Porto.

FRANCE

Alexandros Katranis (St Etienne/Ligue 1): Wasn’t a part of the St Etienne squad on Sunday as the club conceded a 1:3 loss to Bordeaux at home.

Panagiotis Vlachodimos (Nimes/Ligue 2): Nimes clinched promotion with a 4:0 victory against GFC Ajaccio. The Greek made a substitute appearance in the final 18 minutes.

Giannis Charontakis (AC Ajaccio/Ligue 2): Not included in AC Ajaccio’s roster for the 1:1 away tie with Auxerre.

SPAIN

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): Played 90 minutes in the 0:3 home defeat against Levante.

HOLLAND

Kostas Lamprou (Ajax/Eredivisie): The Greek goalkeeper was finally handed his Eredivisie debut with Ajax. Saved five Excelsior shots to guide his team to a 2:1 victory.

Konstantinos Tsimikas (Willem II/Eredivisie): Scored the first goal in Willem II’s 2:2 draw with Vitesse at home and played the full 90 minutes.

Pantelis Hatzidiakos (AZ Alkmaar/Eredivisie): Remained on the pitch for the whole game against Zwolle. His club AZ earned a 6:0 win.

Thanasis Karagounis (Twente/Eredivisie): Relegated Twente played to a 1:1 tie with Breda without the Greek in their squad.

SCOTLAND

Georgios Sarris (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Wasn’t included in the Hamilton roster for the 0:1 loss to Dundee.

Giannis Skondras (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Also couldn’t be found in the squad during the same Scottish Premiership fixture.

Chrysovalantis Kozoronis (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Sat out the 0:1 defeat against Dundee at home.

Marios Ogkmpoe (Hamilton/Scottish Premiership): Started the match with Dundee and played the whole 90 minutes, unable to save Hamilton from defeat.

CROATIA

Savvas Gentsoglou (Hajduk Split/HNL): Not in Hajduk’s squad on Sunday as the team lost 1:2 to Rudes.

Charalampos Mavrias (Rijeka/HNL): Once again, the Greek wasn’t given a chance by the Rijeka coaching staff in the 0:1 defeat against Lokomotiva Zagreb.

SWEDEN

Sotirios Papagiannopoulos (Ostersunds/Allsvenskan): Competed for 90 minutes in central defence against Norrkoping. Nevertheless, Ostersunds did lose 0:2.

Konstantinos Stavrothanasopoulos (Frej/Superettan): Started the 0:2 loss to AFC Eskilstuna, eventually replaced after 75 minutes.

ISRAEL

Stefanos Athanasiadis (Maccabi Haifa/Israeli Premier League): Wasn’t included in the Maccabi Haifa squad for the 1:1 draw against Sakhnin.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Georgios Katsidis (Olympia Prague/League 2): Not in the Olympia Prague roster in the 0:0 tie with Vitkovice.

Thomas Vasiliou (Olympia Prague/League 2): Just like his fellow Greek teammate, he wasn’t in the squad against Vitkovice away from home.

POLAND

Mavroudis Bougaidis (Podbeskidzie/Polish League 1): Received a yellow card while playing the full 90 minutes in the 1:1 draw against Rakow.

AUSTRIA

Thanos Petsos (Rapid Vienna/Austrian Bundesliga): Made an assist for Rapid Vienna’s second goal in the 2:0 win over LASK Linz. Played 90 minutes.

HUNGARY

Nikos Ioannidis (Diosgyori/Nemzeti Bajnokság): Remained on the pitch for the whole game against Mezokovesd-Zsory. Diosgyori dropped a 0:1 loss.

ROMANIA

Sokratis Fytanidis (Gaz Metan/Liga 1): The defender played 90 minutes in the close 2:3 defeat against Dinamo Bucharesti.

Alexandros Fioretos (Gaz Metan/Liga 1): Unlike Gaz Metan’s other Greek player, he wasn’t a member of the roster for the same match.

Giorgos Katsikas (Dinamo Bucharesti/Liga 1): Booked by the referee while playing the full 90 minutes in the 3:2 win over Gaz Metan on the road.

BULGARIA

Antonis Stergiakis (Slavia Sofia/Parva Liga): The young 19-year old goalkeeper conceded on three occasions in the 1:3 loss to Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Christos Kontochristos (Lokomotiv Sofia/Vtora Liga): Played 90 minutes in his team’s 2:1 away win against Tsarsko Selo.

BELARUS

Giannis Kargas (Dynamo Brest/Belarusian Premier League): Picked up a yellow card and played the full match in the 0:2 loss to Torpedo Zhodino. Also participated in the mid-week 4:1 victory against Dnepr Mogilyov in the Belarusian Cup.

USA

Alexandros Tambakis (North Carolina/USL): North Carolina didn’t have a match this weekend.
