Greeks Abroad Review: Vlachodimos registers another clean sheet
 

AGONAsport’s Shaun Nicolaides rounds up the performances of Greeks playing in foreign leagues in this week’s Greeks Abroad Review.

At the moment, the vast majority of leagues across Europe are in the middle of their respective winter breaks, but there was still some action across the continent. In Portugal, Odisseas Vlachodimos earned a clean sheet as Benfica claimed a 1-0 away win at Guimaraes, while Kostas Manolas suffered another damaging defeat with Napoli in Serie A.

MAIN MEN (Comprised of current/former national team players):

Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Last week, the experienced centre-back scored in a 2-0 win against Manchester United, playing 90 minutes. Also played the entirety of a 1-0 FA Cup triumph over Leeds United.

Jose Cholevas (Watford/English Premier League): Used as a substitute in the 60th minute of a 2-1 home win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, before missing the 3-3 draw with Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup.

Nikos Karelis (Brentford/English Championship): The injured forward did not participate in the 4-0 league victory against Bristol City  and the 1-0 FA Cup win over Stoke City.

Charalampos Lykogiannis (Cagliari/Serie A): Sat on the bench during an emphatic 4-0 defeat at reigning champions Juventus.

Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Lecce/Serie A): Played the entire 90 minutes of a narrow 1-0 loss against Udinese at home.

Kostas Manolas (Napoli/Serie A): Despite playing 90 minutes against Internazionale at home, the Greek defender couldn’t prevent Napoli from losing 3-1.

Orestis Karnezis (Napoli/Serie A): Kept on the bench in the same game for Napoli.

Dimitris Siovas (Leganes/La Liga): The injured defender missed the 2-2 draw against Valladolid.

Vasilis Lampropoulos (Deportivo/La Liga 2): Kept the bench warm during a 1-0 away triumph at Numancia.

Odisseas Vlachodimos (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Kept a clean sheet as Benfica defeated Guimaraes 1-0 on the road. 

Andreas Samaris (Benfica/Portuguese Primeira Liga): Emerged as a substitute in the 81st minute of the 1-0 victory against Guimaraes.

Panagiotis Kone (Western United/A-League): Did not participate in a 3-2 loss against Melbourne City on the road.

ENGLAND

Konstantinos Mavropanos (Arsenal/English Premier League): Missed the match against Manchester United and was on the bench for the FA Cup game with Leeds United.

ITALY

Giorgos Kyriakopoulos (Sassuolo/Serie A): Played the full 90 minutes against Genoa as his club suffered a 2-1 defeat away from home.
