Greeks to play USA and Czech Republic in second stage

Greece will play against the USA and the Czech Republic in Group K of the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

This afternoon, Greece secured their passage to the second phase of the World Cup in China, defeating New Zealand 103-97 in a tense encounter. The Episimi Agapimeni had lost to Brazil (79-78) and defeated Montenegro (85-60) in the opening two matches.

Greece qualified for the second stage as Group F runners-up behind Brazil, while New Zealand and Montenegro move down to the classification matches:

Group F standings:

  1. Brazil, 6 points

  2. Greece, 5 points

  3. New Zealand, 4 points

  4. Montenegro, 3 points

It has now been confirmed that Brazil, Greece, America and the Czech Republic will all compete in Group K, the second group stage of the tournament.

Every team plays against the two nations in their group that they did not face in the first round. Greece will play against the USA on Saturday, before facing the Czech Republic next Monday.

Group K schedule:

September 7

Brazil – Czech Republic (11:30 GR)

United States – Greece (15:30 GR)

September 9

Czech Republic – Greece (11:30 GR)

United States – Brazil (15:30 GR)

In Group E, the USA predictably finished in first place, beating the Czechs (88-67), Turkey (93-92) and Japan (98-45). For their part, the Czech Republic were expected to be knocked out by the Turks, but they earned a vital win (91-76) today to snatch second spot. The Czech Republic had previously lost to the Americans (88-67) and beaten Japan (89-76).

Group E standings:

  1. USA, 6 points

  2. Czech Republic, 5 points

  3. Turkey, 4 points

  4. Japan, 3 points

In the event Greece, Brazil and the Czech Republic finish level in the standings, point differential will decide who progresses to the next round.

The bottom two teams from each group are eliminated and ranked in places 9-16 according to the Official Basketball Rules.
