Greens conquer Ajax in friendly

Panathinaikos put in their most impressive pre-season performance to date by defeating Dutch giants Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam on Monday thanks to a double from Italian striker Federico Macheda.

Giorgos Donis’ team went in front after just 10 minutes through Macheda, with Donny van de Beek levelling matters for last season’s Champions League semi-finalists 15 minutes later.

But the Greens, who were strong tactically and in defence against their illustrious opponents, proved more than a match and claimed a deserved victory thanks to another Macheda strike three minutes after half-time.

While pre-season friendly victories must always be taken with a pinch of salt, and are rarely a good marker to gauge in terms of results, this win is a big one for Panathinaikos - mainly because of the overall performance.

Panathinaikos could also afford to miss a few chances, as Ajax did not really threaten the visitors’ goal as much as they would have liked.

Earlier today, Ajax were drawn with PAOK in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.
