Huge progress witnessed at Agia Sofia Stadium in two years

Two years ago, work finally began on the Agia Sofia Stadium in Nea Filadelfeia, with AEK set to start using the arena in the summer of 2020.

On July 27, 2017, AEK supremo Dimitris Melissanidis held a celebratory event at the site of the old Nikos Goumas Stadium in Nea Filadelfeia, with the Kitrinomavri having just received planning permission for their brand new arena. The project for the Agia Sofia Stadium had been in the pipeline for a number of years before AEK were finally allowed to begin constructing their stadium which is being built directly on the spot where the historic Nikos Goumas Stadium once stood.

Fast forward two years, and the dream is rapidly taking shape. The building site is now starting to resemble a football stadium, and assuming nothing untoward happens, it will be ready for use in the 2019/2020 season. AEK have been playing their home matches at the Olympic Stadium in Athens since the Nikos Goumas Stadium was demolished in 2003.

The Agia Sofia Stadium is also a part of the Greece bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
