Impressive PAOK derby record continues

With PAOK still unbeaten in the 2018/2019 Super League season, AGONAsport analyses the Thessaloniki club’s impressive record in the key matches.

This season, PAOK have discovered the key to achieving positive results in Athens and Piraeus, defeating Olympiacos and Panathinaikos while holding AEK to a tense 1:1 draw. Unlike the 2017/2018 season, when PAOK lost 0:1 to AEK and Olympiacos on the road, the Dikefalos tou Vorra have been almost faultless in the key derby matches as they seemingly power to the Super League title.

In comparison to the previous campaign, there has been a large change to the mentality. With 23 matches in the books, PAOK are still undefeated, and if they avoid defeat in the remaining seven matches, they will become the second team in Greek football history to win the domestic championship without losing a single game. The first club to achieve that feat was Panathinaikos.

Early on in the season, PAOK managed to pick up a crucial 1:0 victory against Olympiacos at the Karaiskakis Stadium, soaking up plenty of pressure and then winning the match with a clumsy own-goal from Serbian defender Jagos Vukovic. Last week, the team comfortably beat Panathinaikos 2:0 in the Greek capital with a dominant showing against the young Greens as Mauricio and Leo Jaba scored at close range, and PAOK had also tallied a 1:1 draw with AEK at the Olympic Stadium after playing the majority of the match with only 10 men.

Just like in the triumphant 1975/1976 season, PAOK have managed to go undefeated against Athenian clubs in major derbies, and in that particular campaign, the club tallied four wins and two draws in battles with Olympiacos, Panathinaikos and AEK. This season, PAOK gained an impressive five victories and one draw in the six derby match-ups.
