Ionikos come from behind in Egaleo, Big wins for Ierapetra and Trikala

Ierapetra, Trikala, and Ionikos recorded important wins over the weekend in the Football League as they lead the way in the fight for promotion.

In the weekend’s opening fixture, Trikala were 2-1 victors over Veria. The hosts opened the scoring in the second minute with Ikonomopoulos and doubled their lead midway through the second half with Stamatis. Veria got back into the game in the 73rd minute with Pasha’s goal, however Trikala held on to their advantage for the win. The result temporarily moved Trikala into first place, but after Sunday’s results, the Thessaly club are tied for second with Ionikos on 13 points. Veria are tied for fifth with 11 points.

The derby of the weekend - one with memories of an A’ Ethniki fixture some years ago - was held in Egaleo between the home side and Ionikos. The visitors came from behind to record a 1-2 victory to sit in second place with Trikala on 13 points. Stamatakis’ header gave the hosts the lead as early as the fourth minute, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. In similar fashion, however, Kritikos leveled the scoring in the 21st minute before Manalis took advantage of a defensive lapse and gave Ionikos the lead in the 37th minute. The hosts increased their pressure in the second half looking for an equalizer, however it wasn’t meant to be as Ionikos held on for the important win.

Ierapetra came from behind to defeat Kavala and took over sole as sole leaders in the league. The Cretan club took the lead in the 15th minute through Papadopoulos, however Kavala managed to turn the game around in the first half as Chanti (20) and Vasahkli (29) found the back of the net. But it was the hosts who fired two second-half goals through Anastasopoulos (51) and Sehou (79) and now sit in top spot with 14 points. The Macedonian club is tied for fifth with Veria on 11 points.

In other action, Kalamata’s downfall continued as Triglia took down the Laconia side 1-0 at home, summoning them to their third consecutive defeat. Thesprotos received a big boost as they defeated Aspropyrgos by the same scoreline and the two clubs are now tied for 10th with seven points.

A goal in each half gave Olympiacos Volos a 2-0 win over Ialysos while Niki Volos, who are tied for bottom spot with Ialysos, were held to a 1–1 draw in Rhodes against Diagoras.
