Italian striker Macheda pens three-year deal with Panathinaikos
 

Panathinaikos have pulled off their long-awaited major signing, penning a three-year deal with Italian forward Federico Macheda.

Back in 2009, Macheda burst onto the scene at Manchester United, scoring the winning goal in an English Premier League match against Aston Villa on his debut. However, since his glory days at Old Trafford ended, the Italian has seen his career take a huge nosedive as he endured unsuccessful spells at Sampdoria, Queens Park Rangers, VfB Stuttgart, Doncaster Rovers, Birmingham City, Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest and Novara, most recently only scoring three goals in 30 appearances in the 2017/2018 Serie B season. 

Having been released from Novara this summer, the 27-year old was available as a free agent and Panathinaikos snapped up him on a three-year contract. The Athenians confirmed his arrival with this statement:

“Panathinaikos FC announces the arrival of Italian striker Federico Macheda. He has signed a three-year contract with the Trifylli after completing his medical examinations.”

Born in Rome, the striker initially joined Lazio’s academy, but he was signed by Manchester United in 2007 and he managed to score four English Premier League goals with the club in 19 matches. After his disappointing spell at Serie B outfit Novara, Macheda will be hoping for better times at Panathinaikos.

KOLOVETSIOS CALLED UP TO NATIONAL TEAM

Following the injury sustained by AEK Athens right-back Michalis Bakakis, Panathinaikos defender Dimitris Kolovetsios has been called up to the Greek national team for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. 26-year old Kolovetsios is uncapped with the Ethniki Omada.

Greece will play Estonia in Tallinn on September 8 and Hungary in Budapest on September 11.
