Ivanschitz Calls it a Day

Former Panathinaikos hero Andreas Ivanschitz has officially retired from football at the age of 35. The Austrian ace wore the Trifylli from 2006 up until 2009 and gave fans many moments to savour.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport: Bayern Munich - AEK, UEFA Champions League matchday 4 fixture on Wednesday, November 7th. Details here.

The attacking midfielder known as “Mozzart” and the “Austrian Beckham” ironically started his career at Rapid Vienna - a club Panathinaikos fans have a strong affinity with. He then moved to Red Bull Salzburg before shifting to Athens. He spent 3 great years in Greece, and moved to Mainz in Germany on a lengthy loan spell. He was still a technically a Green up until 2011, without playing for his parent club for some time.

The Austrian international (who made his debut against Greece in 2003 and represented his country at Euro 2008) then moved to Spain to play for Levante before ending his career with spells in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders and Viktoria Plzen in the Czech Republic.

His left foot will live long in the memory of all Panathinaikos fans, as it was the source of many goals and assists. He was also deadly from set pieces and from wide positions when looking to cross or cut inside.

Ivanschitz broke the news of his retirement from the game via his Facebook page and Panathinaikos wasted no time in thanking the former captain for his contributions.
