Kaltsidou retires from basketball at 36

Stella Kaltsidou, who had already retired from international duty, has announced that she will no longer compete as a professional basketball player.

Kaltsidou, 36, had announced her retirement from international basketball in November 2018 after a EuroBasket qualifier against Great Britain. After leaving the national team, Kaltsidou did continue playing at club level for Polkowice in Poland, but earlier this month she revealed that her days as a professional player had reached their conclusion:

“It is time to withdraw from competitive action. This is a difficult decision because my heart doesn’t agree with it, but my suffering body has a different view. 27 years have passed, and it has been a wonderful journey which gave me unique experiences, intense emotions, friendships and incredible moments which only sport can offer! However, while one door has closed, another has opened. I will begin coaching. My body doesn’t respond on the court anymore, but my mind is working at its best.”

Kaltsidou will begin her coaching career with the national team set-up and the Amarousion men’s team.

She is the third-highest scorer in the history of the women’s national team while holding eighth place in terms of appearances for Greece. Kaltsidou has featured in several international competitions and is rightly regarded as a legend of the women’s game.
