Clear scoring chances were few and far between in this Matchday 9 encounter that was low on quality, but one moment of brilliance from Brazilian forward Thuram clinched all three points for Sotiris Antoniou’s men.

The 28-year-old striker raced on to a brilliant reverse pass from Tyronne Del Pino and turned a defender before finishing clinically with a powerful shot which nestled into the bottom left corner of Nikos Melissas’ goal.

And that proved enough for the home side, who just about deserved the win after creating the best chances on the night.

Both Elini Dimoutsos and Thuram had efforts saved by Melissas in the first half, and Thuram also headed wide as Lamia tried to get a breakthrough.

Lazar Romanic then tested the flexes of Melissas again in the 71st minute, but the Volos goalkeeper was equal to the shot and produced a stunning save to keep the ball out.

Volos, who lost 2-0 at home to PAOK last time out, looked a shade of the team which had impressed earlier in its first few matches of the season, struggling to create opportunities and interrupting the game with a series of niggly fouls.

And on 80 minutes Lamia finally got the breakthrough they deserved through Thuram, who showed great composure and skill to skip past a defender before firing the ball home and celebrating wildly.

It’s a result which sees Lamia move to within one point of 11th-placed Volos who have eight points, but the Fthiotida club remain in 12th place.
