Leaders Kalamata suffer maiden defeat

Until this weekend, Kalamata hadn’t tasted defeat in the 2019/2020 Football League season, but they were beaten by Diagoras Rodou on the road while closest challengers Trikala drew.

It wasn’t Kalamata’s day in Rhodes. Theodoros Papadopoulos opened the scoring in the third minute of play, before Diagoras doubled their advantage in the closing stages of the game to seal their 2-0 victory. Kalamata missed a penalty as they were condemned to their maiden loss of the Football League season.

Diagoras are up to fourth.

On Saturday, Trikala had the chance to overtake Kalamata and move into first position, but they could only tally a 0-0 home draw with third-placed Kavala. Kalamata hold a slender one-point lead at the top of the table.

Olympiacos Volou are off the mark. Before round five, they hadn’t won a game in the current Football League campaign, but they snapped that barren run with a tense 2-1 triumph over Ierapetra. Stelios Pozoglou scored the winner six minutes after the half-time break. Incidentally, this was Ierapetra’s first loss of the season.

Inconsistent Egaleo earned their second win with a 2-0 victory against Niki Volou at their home ground. Trailing 1-0 at the time, Niki Volou didn’t do themselves any favours in the 72nd minute, as Antonio Raul Rojano received a red card to put his team in a tough situation. Niki Volou - languishing in 12th place - have lost three games already.

Aspropyrgos were held to their third draw of the new season as they played to a 1-1 tie against Veria. Stopping their run of two successive losses in the process, Ionikos beat Ialysos 1-0 at home with a goal from Michalis Kallergis in the 79th minute, while Thesprotos finally won at the fifth time of asking as they defeated Triglia 3-0. Triglia are rock bottom with four defeats in five games.
