Legal battle developing as Olympiacos see request rejected

The legal battle between Olympiacos and PAOK is continuing to gain momentum, with the former having recently been denied the chance to analyse the latter’s file.

As previously reported on AGONAsport, Olympiacos have submitted an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in a bid to see PAOK relegated, while the Dikefalos tou Vorra are appealing against their seven-point deduction. PAOK and Xanthi were both handed points deductions as a result of being found guilty by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) of participating in a multi-ownership deal.

Olympiacos had first accused PAOK owner, Ivan Savvidis, of also controlling Xanthi towards the end of 2019. PAOK and Savvidis are continuing to vehemently deny all allegations against them.

Earlier this year, the EPO confirmed that the points deductions for PAOK (-7) and Xanthi (-12) are to stay in place, but Olympiacos then decided to appeal against that decision to the CAS. The Erythrolefki are adamant that the two clubs should be relegated as a punishment for their violation.

On May 13, PAOK submitted their appeal to the CAS, but Olympiacos were given permission to wait until May 29 to submit their file after they requested an extension.

The reason behind Olympiacos’ request only recently came to light.

Olympiacos wanted to gain access to PAOK’s documents and subsequently adapt their appeal based on their findings. However, unfortunately for the Piraeus-based organisation, the CAS firmly rejected Olympiacos’ request to look at PAOK’s appeal in detail. Both clubs will only be able to analyse each other’s files after Olympiacos have eventually submitted their appeal on May 29.

In the 2019/2020 Super League regular season, Olympiacos remained undefeated to claim first place of the standings, while PAOK are 14 points behind in a somewhat distant second. PAOK won both the Super League and the Greek Cup in the 2018/2019 campaign.
