Macheda experiencing career-best season

Federico Macheda is experiencing a career-best season with 12 goals from 23 league appearances.

Federico Macheda has played a significant role in Panathinaikos’ successful season to date as the Greens finished the regular season in fourth place with 12 wins, eight draws, and six losses. Panathinaikos sit with 44 points, seven behind third-placed AEK, and eight points behind second-placed PAOK (after their seven-point deduction).

Macheda has contributed with 12 goals in the Greek Super League (one in the Cup) in 23 league appearances for Panathinaikos this season. His 12 markers are a career-best for the Italian striker. 

His previous career-high was ten goals, which he recorded last season with Panathinaikos and with Birmingham in the 2013/14 English Championships (second division). Macheda will surely add to his tally as Panathinaikos will compete in the ten-game Super League Playoffs.

Macheda, who netted two goals on the final matchday of the regular season in Panathinaikos’ 4-1 win over Volos, is the league’s second-highest scorer only behind Olympiacos hitman Youssef El-Arabi, who has netted 17 goals. 

Macheda joined Panathinaikos in 2018 to replace the prolific Marcus Berg in hopes of pushing the “reset button” in his career. Macheda’s good form has sparked interested from clubs abroad, and according to gazzetta.gr, if an offer is received for 1.5 million euros, Panathinaikos could sell their leading goal scorer. Carlitos, who was signed in January and will be eligible to play next season, is looked at as the perfect replacement for Macheda.

Macheda’s contract with Panathinaikos expires in 2021.
