The hiring of Martins in April 2018 was a shrewd move by Evangelos Marinakis. When he moved to Olympiacos two years ago, the Portuguese coach quickly introduced stability, consistency, and calmness to the organisation, subsequently building a strong squad that has remained firmly united. Olympiacos, who qualified for the group stages of the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League before dropping down into the UEFA Europa League knockout phase, hold a 14-point advantage over second-placed PAOK in the Super League. The Erythrolefki haven’t won the domestic championship since 2017.

As it stands, Martins’ contract with Olympiacos is set to expire on June 30, but all signs are pointing towards an extension.

Reports from the Kokkino Protathliti outlet have stated that it is virtually a guarantee that Martins will pen a new deal with Olympiacos. In the future, Martins would like to coach a team playing in a stronger league, but he is happy to remain in Piraeus for the time being. The Olympiacos management has been very impressed with his work over the past two seasons.

Overall, the 49-year-old Portuguese coach has been at the Olympiacos helm for 95 matches across all competitions so far, registering 64 victories, 18 draws, and 13 defeats. Martins has inspired the Piraeus-based organisation to famous European victories against AC Milan and Arsenal in the Europa League.
