Mavropanos linked with possible return to Greece

When he initially joined Arsenal in 2018, young defender Konstantinos Mavropanos managed to gain some minutes on the pitch, but it’s been a different story this season as Greek clubs are waiting in the wings to take him home.

In January 2018, Mavropanos moved from PAS Giannina to Arsenal, with then Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger deciding to keep the centre-back in London instead of loaning him out. In the second half of the 2017/2018 season, the Greek defender made three appearances in the Premier League, and Arsenal fans were satisfied with what they saw.

Unfortunately, after missing the first half of the current campaign with an injury, Mavropanos hasn’t been able to force his way into the plans of new Arsenal boss Unai Emery. So far, the talented 21-year-old has only played in one Premier League game, and that was as a late substitute. Mavropanos is rarely included in the squad for matches and it seems a departure from Arsenal is imminent in the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to reports released by SDNA and to10, Greek giants Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK and Panathinaikos are all ready and waiting to take Mavropanos back to his homeland. Olympiacos and PAOK had made bids for Mavropanos before Arsenal eventually signed him from PAS Giannina last winter.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal decide to let him go on a permanent deal, or if the Londoners simply loan him out to gain more first team experience at the highest level. Would Arsenal like to send Mavropanos on loan to a Greek club? Reports from SDNA are indicating that Arsenal would prefer for Mavropanos to compete in a leading European championship such as the Bundesliga, and given his age and potential, the player himself wouldn’t be overly keen on returning to the Super League already.

Mavropanos is under contract at Arsenal until June 2023. His value is rated at three million euros by Transfermarkt.
