Men’s Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament Postponed

Initially set to take place March 22-29 in the Netherlands, the 2020 Olympic qualification tournament for men’s water polo will now be held May 31-June 7 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

With sporting events all over the world being canceled or postponed, this announcement was inevitable. FINA (the aquatic sports’ governing body) will nevertheless keep the tournament in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, despite having to change the date.

Greece’s men’s national team will now have to wait more than two months to see if they will be able to extend their Olympic qualification streak to 11, having qualified for every Olympics from 1980 on. Three teams will earn qualification for Tokyo via Rotterdam, with Croatia, Greece and Montenegro being the heavy favorites for those three Olympic births.

This news comes after the women’s event, set to take place in Italy, was also postponed until May.
