Midseason transformation puts AEK back on track

After a rough start to the season, AEK have found their form in both the Basket League and the Basketball Champions League.

AEK’s difficult start to the 2019/2020 season saw the Athenian club struggling in the Basket League with a dismal 1-4 record, but a turnaround for the Vasilissa now sees the club back near the top of the table in the Greek top flight.

AEK’s seven-straight wins in the Basket League is the longest active winning streak in Greek basketball as the Athenians sit in a two-way tie with Peristeri for third place, just three games behind leaders Panathinaikos.

It seems as though the club’s success in Europe has fueled the turnaround domestically as AEK’s 7-2 record on the continent has Ilias Papatheodorou’s men sitting alone atop the Group B standings in the Basketball Champions League.

European success and gritty defense from AEK’s main contributors has been the winning combination for the club as AEK’s current run of form has been boosted by the club’s ability to shut down opposing offenses for the second stingiest defense in the Basket League.

AEK will look to stretch their winning streak to eight games in the Basket League when the Enosi host Ionikos as the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall on Saturday.
