Mitroglou opens scoring in thrilling Marseille win against Monaco
 

In France, Greek striker Konstantinos Mitroglou grabbed his first Ligue 1 goal of the season, setting Marseille on the way to a thrilling 3:2 victory at Monaco.

Last season, 30-year old Mitroglou struggled with injuries and was linked with a move away from Marseille during the summer, but he defied the critics by hitting the jackpot against Monaco. Gifted a place in the Marseille starting line-up, the Greek international opened the scoring at the Stade Louis II on the stroke of half time, pulling away from his marker to plant a firm header into the right corner beyond the statuesque Diego Benaglio. Marseille eventually won a pulsating encounter 3:2 and Mitroglou was replaced in stoppage time.

In the previous two Ligue 1 matches, Mitroglou had emerged off the substitutes’ bench to make cameo appearances. After four rounds of play, Marseille currently occupy fifth place of the standings with seven points, trailing leaders Paris Saint Germain by five.
