OFFICIAL: EPO approve Football League request for relegation/promotion playoff

In yet another scandal for Greek football, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) accepted the Football League’s request for a promotion/relegation playoff to be held in the 2018/2019 season, something which has infuriated the Super League.

With the Super League’s participant list set to be reduced from 16 to 14 for the 2019/2020 season, the original plan was for three teams to be relegated and one promoted, but the Football League protested that idea and requested for a relegation/promotion playoff to be held between the 13th placed Super League team and the club in second position of the Football League.

On Friday, the Executive Committee of the EPO voted in favour of a relegation/promotion playoff with a majority of 10-6. As a result, the 14th, 15th and 16th placed teams in the 2018/2019 Super League will automatically be relegated, the Football League winners will immediately be promoted, but the team in 13th place of the Super League will have to compete in a playoff against the Football League’s second best club to retain its top flight status.

Naturally, the Super League is furious with the decision and will take the matter to the Arbitration Court. After the announcement was made public, AE Larissa and Apollon Smyrnis called for the start of the 2018/2019 Super League to be delayed, however it was subsequently confirmed that the campaign will begin as planned on August 25 despite the chaotic situation.

The EPO versus Super League war is threatening to get completely out of hand and the latter will exercise all possible legal paths to prevent a promotion/relegation playoff from taking place.
