This following statement was released on Tuesday afternoon:

“Panathinaikos FC announces the start of its cooperation with Daniel Poyatos! The contract signed with the 42-year-old lasts for two years.

“His staff will include assistant coach Marcel Sans Navarro, fitness coach Miguel Gomila Andreu and goalkeeping coach Josep Pascual Trabal.”

Poyatos replaces Giorgos Donis at the Panathinaikos helm after the latter was sacked by unpopular owner Giannis Alafouzos. This season, Panathinaikos managed to finish in fourth place of the Super League, gaining 58 points from 36 matches.

However, due to their punishment from UEFA for financial regulations, Panathinaikos cannot participate in European tournaments next season. Fourth position would have normally granted the Athenians a berth in the UEFA Europa League.

In the past, Poyatos has been involved in the coaching systems of Espanyol, Bahrain, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Real Madrid. The Spaniard was the head coach of Real’s under 19 team during the 2019/2020 campaign.
