Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport, Lefteris Avgenakis, revealed that teams will return to training on May 5 during a scheduled conference on Thursday evening:

“From May 5, the training of football clubs competing in the highest division will be allowed in groups from six to eight players. It will be about fitness, strengthening and improving technique. The resumption of tournaments will be behind closed doors. Organising authorities will decide whether they cancel or complete competitions.”

It had previously been thought that group training sessions would only return towards the end of May. However, after a crucial video conference yesterday, the Super League revealed that it was preparing to submit a request to the government to allow teams to train together again. The organisation wants the playoffs and playouts to begin in the closing weeks of May or at the start of June.

Only Panathinaikos, Panionios, Panetolikos and PAOK have refused to support the resumption of the 2019/2020 Super League season.

Avgenakis also provided more details concerning the training process and the priority given to athletes preparing for the Olympic Games next year:

“The measures we are announcing will take effect from May 5. Initially, all individual training will be granted to athletes preparing for the Olympic Games. Individual training for low-risk individual sports will also be allowed. The changing rooms, showers and indoor gyms will remain closed. When we come into contact with another person, we will wash our hands with antiseptic. Facilities will be disinfected.”

As a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, the start of the Super League playoffs and playouts was indefinitely suspended during the first half of March, with the regular season having already been completed. Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos, OFI and Aris qualified for the championship playoffs, while Atromitos, AEL, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos, Xanthi, Panetolikos and Panionios dropped into the relegation playouts.

140 people with coronavirus have died in Greece. 2,591 cases of the illness have been recorded.
