This following statement was released by Panathinaikos on Wednesday:

“Panathinaikos OPAP BC announces that Giorgos Vovoras will take over the duties of head coach of our team for the 2020/2021 season.”

“It is a great honour and a huge responsibility for me to be the head coach of Panathinaikos,” stated Vovoras when speaking to the club. “I have been a member of this wonderful family for many years and I understand the weight of the responsibility I take on. I don’t like to say a lot of words. I promise that together with my colleagues, we will work hard in order for the team to achieve its goals and to justify the administration for its trust.”

The 43-year-old had been working as an assistant coach with Panathinaikos on the second occasion since 2016. During his career, Vovoras has also been an assistant at the likes of PAOK, Peristeri and UNICS Kazan, while holding the position of head coach at OFI (2008-2009) and APOEL (2015-2016).

Vovoras was the interim Panathinaikos boss for the third time during the 2019/2020 campaign for two EuroLeague games against Bayern Munich and Zalgiris Kaunas on the road.

Following Dimitris Giannakopoulos’ recent departure from the organisation, Panathinaikos’ future is somewhat uncertain, with the management vowing to leave the EuroLeague in favour of the Basketball Champions League. Giannakopoulos has put Panathinaikos on sale for 25 million euros.
