OFI Crete began 2020 just as they ended 2019, with another defeat as they slipped to a 2-1 home loss against Volos at the Theodoros Vardinoyiannis stadium in Heraklion, while Atromitos defeated Asteras Tripolis 2-1 in Peristeri.

Leftheris Lyratzis opened the scoring for Juan Ferrando’s visitors from Magnesia after 35 minutes, but OFI levelled two minutes before the hour mark through Juan Neira.

Georgios Simos’ OFI side squandered several chances to move ahead in the match in the second half, and the home side were made to pay when Fernando Ruben Joao struck what proved to be a 79th-minute winner for Volos.

The result means OFI lost for the second time in succession and is now without a win in its last three matches, a run of form which if continues threatens to derail the Cretan club’s great start to the season and its bid for the European places.

However, for now OFI remain in fourth place with 23 points, while Volos climb up to eighth spot with 21 points.

Meanwhile in Athens, Giorgos Manousos slotted home a 90th-minute penalty to seal a tightly-contested 2-1 home win for Atromitos over strugglers Asteras Tripolis in Saturday’s late game.

Manousos kept a cool head to claim all three points for Giorgos Korakakis’ side at the Peristeri Municipal Stadium - a result which saw the Athenian club move level on 22 points with sixth-placed Larissa and seventh-placed Panathinaikos.

The penalty was Manousos’ second goal in the match, with the Greek striker having also put Atromitos ahead in the 76th minute. Jeronimo Barrales had levelled the match for Asteras just two minutes later, but Atromitos had the last word.

Things are not looking quite as rosy for Asteras, who remain third from bottom with 15 points from 17 matches.
