Olympiacos got a dose of revenge on Wednesday night as the Piraeus giants beat Fenerbahce 90-83 in Turkey, just six months after losing to the Turkish side in the tournament’s climax.

Making their 400th appearance in EuroLeague competition, only second all-time to Barcelona’s 405 appearances, Wednesday night’s effort from Olympiacos at the Sinan Erdem Dome showed just how much the Erythrolefki have evolved since last season.

Still without inspirational captain Vassilis Spanoulis, Olympiacos benefited from four scorers to reach double digits on the night; including Brian Roberts who notched 21 points, and half of his side’s three-pointers.

With several memebers of Fenerbahce’s title-winning season now moved on, it was a James Nunnally who led Fenerbahce scorers with 22 points – just six months on from scoring just two points in 16 minutes of last season’s Final.

Following a tight first quarter, Olympiacos fans could have been excused for thinking for seeing signs of deja vu after Fenerbahce surged to a 10-point lead thanks to a 23-12 run in the second quarter.

Trailing at halftime, Yiannis Sfairopoulos’ pep talk certainly worked as Olympiacos came out firing in the third frame. A dominant 27-13 run saw Olympiacos quickly erase the Fenerbahce lead to take a four-point lead of their own into the final quarter.

Fenerbahce would claw their way back in the final frame as the Turkish side forced overtime, yet the defending champions did benefit from a late Roberts miss that would have surely been a match-winner.

Roberts would make up for his miss in the extra frame, through it was clutch shooting from Georgios Printezis and Janis Strelnieks that sealed an impressive come-from-behind win for Olympiacos.

The win moves Olympiacos to 5-2 on the season, while Fenerbahce have now lost to both Greek clubs and find themselves at an uncomfortable 4-3.

Both sides return to action on Friday with Olympiacos returning home to face Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade, while Fenerbahce will look to rebound on the road against league leaders CSKA Moscow.
