Recently, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) unveiled their club rankings for 2019. Greek side Olympiacos finished in 26th place according to the rankings.

This was the highest placing for a Greek team for the year and represents a jump of 78 places for the Piraeus club as compared to their 2018 ranking (104th place). The Erythrolefki earned 196 points from the IFFHS who use an algorithm based on a club’s results domestically and in continental competition from January 1st to December 21st every year.

Amongst the world’s top 400 ranked sides were three other Greek teams. PAOK was the next highest finished in 92nd place with 136.5 points. The  reigning Greek champions may have been superb in Greek Super League 1 play for the majority of the year, but a poor European campaign saw the club drop 49 places from last year’s ranking.

Next up for Greek teams was AEK in 127th place with 117 points. The Kitrinomavri also saw a substantial drop from their previous year’s ranking which had them as high as 69th in the world.

Other Greek clubs in the top 400 were Aris (231st, 87 points), Atromitos (255th, 80 points), and Lamia (377th, 63 points). It is noteworthy that Panathinaikos did not make the cut, a side who in many years were the highest ranked Greek club.

Topping the IFFHS list was reigning World and European club champions Liverpool (1st, 316 points), followed by Barcelona (2nd, 293 points) and Manchester City (3rd, 284 points)
