The Olympiacos organisation has been sent into mourning. Theodoridis, who continued working with Olympiacos up until his death, lost his battle against health problems on Monday after being admitted to the intensive care unit of Athens’ Sotiria Hospital a few days prior. He was 85 years of age.

Theodoridis was the honorary president of Olympiacos. He recently saw his beloved Erythrolefki become Greek champions for the 45th time in history.

As a professional goalkeeper, Theodoridis played for Olympiacos throughout his career which ended in 1962, standing out with his wonderful performances before he subsequently became the vice president, general manager and honorary president of the Thrylos after hanging up his boots. His never-ending dedication and passion for the Piraeus-based club played a big role in the team’s numerous successes.

He also made 12 appearances for the senior Greek national team.

Olympiacos released this following statement in connection with his death:

“If the term “a soldier of Olympiacos” could be personified, then it is a fact that it would be the one and only Savvas Theodoridis.

“He was the goalkeeper of the legendary team to win 6 championships in a row; he was capped for the first time back in 1953. He wore the red-and-white jersey with our emblem on until the end of his career; he retired in 1962.

“Standing always next to his beloved Olympiacos, he always offered his services from various positions, carrying out the duties of vice-president and general manager. As such, he won among others 7 consecutive domestic titles. Over the past years, he bore the title of our club’s president emeritus.

“He was happy enough to celebrate along with our players the club’s 45th championship title, which Evangelos Marinakis dedicated to him personally.

“Olympiacos FC expresses its deep condolences to the family and relatives of Savvas Theodoridis.

“Savvas Theodoridis, have a peaceful travel in the eternal seas.”
