After missing a handful of clear chances in the first half, Olympiacos fans were beginning to fear another set of two dropped points, but the dominant hosts finally made their superiority count with two second-half goals from Hillal Soudani and Youssef El Arabi. As a result of the win, Olympiacos move three points clear of PAOK (who play AEK tomorrow) at the top of the table, but Lamia sit in 11th spot with three points from five games.

Olympiacos will now prepare to face Red Star in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Next week, the Erythrolefki travel to Thessaloniki for a tough-looking match against Aris, while Lamia host Panetolikos.

THE MATCH

A much-changed Olympiacos side should have made the breakthrough within two minutes of the first whistle.

Receiving a wonderful pass from Daniel Podence, Soudani had only the goalkeeper to beat, but the Algerian attacker contrived to shoot directly into the grateful grasp of Markos Vellidis.

The home team continued pressing. Leonardo Koutris saw a powerful effort blocked at point blank range, El Arabi curled over when twisting inside the area before Soudani missed two more glorious opportunities.

Lamia were predictably fully focused on defending, but at the start of the second half, Anastasios Karamanos did test Jose Sa when finding a bit of space in a dangerous position.

At the other end, El Arabi then had a goal disallowed for offside.

There was a growing feeling that it wasn’t Olympiacos’ day, but in the 61st minute, the Piraeus giants did score the goal their play merited. Completing a clever move, Soudani stroked the ball beyond Vellidis and Lamia’s stubborn resistance was broken.

The game ended as a contest nine minutes later. Lurking in the box, El Arabi prodded Leonardo Koutris’ pinpoint cross under Vellidis, in turn completing a well-needed victory for Olympiacos after their derby disappointment against Panathinaikos last week.
